My Journey

Since young, I have been mesmerized by science, technology and engineering, specifically robotics, as I strongly believe that it has the potential to transform societies and make the world a better place to live in. I aspire to lead multiple teams of engineers - specializing in intelligent, versatile robotic systems - to work on projects that have the potential to significantly impact the lives of others positively. In later career, I hope to inspire the next generation of engineers by introducing technological and engineering concepts to children from their early childhood.

I began my robotics journey in secondary one. Pioneering the robotics club as president and chief programmer, I have won dozens of robotics competitions at the national level, bagging home hundreds of trophies. In recognition, I was sponsored by external companies with their products and also been offered opportunities in their product testing and research and development.

After secondary school, I joined one of the companies as a part-time robotics consultant/instructor, engaging in product testing and research and development, and coaching schools from all over Singapore, while furthering my studies. To stay updated with the technological evolution, I have been spectating major robotics competitions like the RoboCup International and was fortunate to be invited to the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) robotics research laboratory, which was a fascinating experience.

In Nanyang Polytechnic, I have learnt directly from the world-renowned international robotics (Micromouse) champion and worked on digital signal processing and motor control projects. At the same time, I founded an educational company in technology – a robotics training agency that catered to Singapore educational institutions. Subsequently, for my final year project at Nanyang Polytechnic, I travelled to Beyondsoft, Wuhan, China, as a test engineer and conducted firmware testing of Hewlett-Parkard printers, before graduating with a diploma with merit.

Moving on, I went into the army and served the nation in various units and divisions. After National Service, I was offered several scholarships from organisations like the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA), to further my studies. Ultimately, I decided upon the National University of Singapore (NUS) Electrical and Computer Engineering Scholarship and enrolled into NUS to further my technical knowledge.

In NUS, I embarked on a year-long trip to San Francisco Bay Area under the NUS Overseas College Silicon Valley programme. I took entrepreneurship courses at Stanford University and at the same time worked at Lightning Motors Corp. as an electrical engineer. I prototyped and improved the world’s fastest electric motorcycle in production – the LS-218, as well as prototyped the next generation electric motorcycle from scratch and added it as a new bike model to the product line.

Upon graduation, I joined ST Electronics (Info-Comm Systems) as an electrical engineer. I prototyped and improved an autonomous underwater vehicle platform, after which, I was seconded to DSO National Laboratories (Sensors), where I prototyped and improved a different autonomous underwater vehicle platform.

After my 2-year stint in autonomous underwater vehicle platforms, I entered DSO National Laboratories (Robotics Division) as an electrical engineer, where I prototyped and improved an unmanned aerial vehicle platform.

Subsequently, I moved on and took up the role of system engineer at AR Robotics and Automation under ISDN Holdings (parent company), where I led all robotisation and automation technical development, deployment and maintenance projects in factory and warehouse process transformation. A few months into the role, I was asked to undertake the additional responsibility of heading all engineering efforts under AR Biotech (sister subsidiary), to which I gladly accepted. Eventually, I was internally transferred to the group's founding / anchoring subsidiary, Servo Dynamics, by the Managing Director / President of ISDN Holdings. Under Servo Dynamics Robotic Systems Division, I entered into the role of senior system engineer and led robotisation and automation (AGVs, AMRs, robotic arms) technical development, deployment and maintenance projects in factory and warehouse process transformation.

Besides engineering, I have ventured and took up a variety of part-time jobs to experience various industries such as being a sales promoter, waiter, operations assistant, receptionist, etc, all of which are humbling experiences that refined my character, made me better-rounded and shaped my world view.
